Q: Do you miss Holland?
A: Yes, there are many things about Holland that I miss. #1- the incredible fans and friends I’ve made there from Volendam, Amsterdam, Den Haag, Hilversum, Ede, Apeldoorn, Zoetermeer…. The list goes on. I miss the relaxed pace of life and time to sit for coffee, the farmers markets with fresh Hyacinths blooming and the fresh catch from the Nord Zee. The whir of my bike tires on the road at night driving around peaceful and historic Dutch neighbourhoods. The doileys hanging in open living room windows that reveal cozy practical dutch living rooms. I miss performing in SDOHIJ, and feeling the rush of the deafening crowd and skating on national TV night after night.
Q: What is your best reminder of the Netherlands?
A: My best reminder is the unwavering and consistent support of my friends and fans in NL!
Q: Can we ever expect you on the ice again in Holland?
A: In the immediate future, no, but I would consider SDOHIJ again if/when SBS6 or RTL decides they should run it again! I was so successful!
Q: If you could give a award to someone who would it be and why?
A: My friend Cathy, for being my loyal sidekick who still laughs at all my very tired jokes. So it would be the award entitled “Longsuffering”.
Q: How important are fans to you?
A: Without fans and supporters, I would have no career, I would be dead in the water and I wouldn’t be able to make new music or videos or play shows. My career is sustained by the passionate fanbase, and I’m so grateful.
Q: Do you have a top 5 of presents from fans? Do they have a special place in your house?
A: Can’t answer that! Any token of support that comes from the heart and is because my music has impacted someone is just amazing enough on its own.
YES! I keep everything in my upstairs guest room, so I can show off how amazing my supporters are. It produces quite an eyebrow raise for most people!
Q: What is the meaning of your tattoo?
A: My tattoo is a one of a kind celtic/tribal Christian cross, and it was very meaningful for me to get in 2006, because I had a very difficult year on my very first cruise ship contract, and I wanted after that to claim some of my roots and Christianity back that I felt I had lost while at sea. I got it done in Cozumel Mexico for $200! It’s my only tattoo.
Q: When did you form your band and how did you meet your band members?
A: I formed my first band in 2002, it was a collection of people I met at college and the radio station I was working at as a DJ. Over the years almost every one of my friends has been a member in some form. Even my house-mate Anna became a back up singer, my friend Cathy learned bass guitar in the van on the way to a concert in Iowa, my cousin Beth was my back up singer at one point too- and I used to make her wear regal golden evening gowns.
The current band consists of Dave Siekanowicz (electric guitar) met him through church (The Meeting House), Oskkar Ciejek (bass guitar) met him through Dave S, David Alexander (Drums) MY COUSIN! And Taylor Evans (vocals) met him through David Alexander.
Q: Who are you biggest musical influences?
A: Hillsong, Alanis Morissette, Sigur Ros, Pilate, Coldplay, Enya, Beethoven, Hans Zimmer, Dave Matthews, Bon Iver, Matchbox Twenty, Devotchka, Jason Walker, Greg Laswell, U2, Collective Soul, Counting Crows, Lights… the list could continue forever..
Q: What are your goals for 2012?
A: Make more great music, grow lots of veggies, grow in love, and become that much cooler of a person, doing real things and living a life of integrity.
