Q&A JOEL GELEYNSE - PART 3

06/09/2012

Q: Is there something we don't know about you?
A: There are many things! While I was painting my living room, I was too lazy and saving paint and I painted AROUND my piano. Oops! That didn’t come in handy when I had to move the piano away from the wall for my Molly music video shoot.

Q: You said once that your French is better than your Dutch... How would you describe your knowledge of the French language? Do you speak it fluently or just a little bit.
A: French was my first 2nd language (being Canadian we take it in school every year)… I can make myself understood better in French, but I rarely get to practice it. I have gotten more confused now having learned some Spanish, Turkish and Dutch, I get really confused.

Q: From how many fans do you know their name?
A: I think I know probably 30-40 names of fans… which is pretty good!

Q: What is your greatest weakness?
A: I guess my selfish human nature, pretty much sums it up.

Q: What is your greatest strength?
A: Winging things, estimating, moving blindly forward ?

Q: How many days a week and hours a day you spend at the gym?
A: I spend minimum three days a week in the gym, each time for 1 hour and 15 mins. Sometimes I try to go everyday, but with my schedule it’s so unpredictable, so I go any day I’m free to.

Q: What kind of diet do you follow (kind of food you eat throughout the day). (Special schedule?)
A: I try to eat a solid protein in the morning, eggs/steak/tuna etc. and then lots of veggies from my garden (kale, lettuce, spinach), protein shakes, I add no sugar to coffee, no sauces on things, very little salt, no butter… I hardly cook real meals, just graze all through the day!

Q: Has there ever been a movie you'd love to play in? (If so, which role?)
A: I would have loved to be John Travolta in Grease. Just sayin’ I was in love with that movie since I was 16 and if I do say so myself, I was a lot like him hahah. Maybe now I would say I’d like to have been Tom Cruise in Top Gun, Christian Bale in Batman, and Leonardo DiCaprio in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” haha

Q: Are you going to come back to the NL in the near future?
A: I’m an extremely spontaneous person, and in the many areas of the entertainment world that I am involved in, I have to be available at the drop of a hat for some of the best opportunities. I am always looking for reasons to come over to NL, as it’s one of my favourite places on earth! If I’m booked for any show I will come!

Q: If you can come back in a new life, what would you be?
A: I would still want to be a person, I think coming back as a cat or a chair would just suck.

Q&A JOEL GELEYNSE - PART 2

06/01/2012

Q: What do you like and dislike about yourself?
A: I dislike that for me always the grass is always greener. No matter what side of the fence I’m on, I look to the other side and it looks better ?

Q: Do you have any bad habits?
A: I only clean things when they are already too dirty, I should do many more preventative actions in my life. I leave things to “winging it” and never commit to plans in advance, which creates lots of scheduling stress. I also talk to my cats in a loud annoying voice ALL THE TIME.

Q: What sport would you possibly do, if you never started ice skating? (Or is there a sport you would like to try?)
A: If I never started figure skating, I might have done gymnastics, diving, or equestrian…

Q: You used to go to rodeos with the family to see your brothers, how much experience do you have with horses and horse riding?
A: I have lots of riding experience, I basically grew up on the back of a horse. I love horses and my family is still really involved with them! My brothers were champions in bullriding and bareback bronc riding!

Q: What are the most difficult figure skating jumps or moves? Can you do them all?
A: The most difficult jumps are the quads and I can’t do those, I used to work on them, but never landed one. Now in my old age I do my best to keep one triple or two in my repertoire (either a salchow, toe, or loop) If I have to get ready for a show or a performance I work on them and in about 3 weeks I’m good to go!

Q: Does the way you workout at the gym and figure skating actually go together well? (Can you maintain flexibility, are you still athletic enough?)
A: It’s kind of difficult because the more muscle I put on the less agile and flexible I am, but I’m trying to find a happy medium!

Q: How did your modeling career began and at what age?
A: When I was 16 I used to drive on my own into the big city of Montreal, and had my very first photo shoot. I was extremely nervous and didn’t have a CLUE what I was doing.

Q: Most of your songs are about relationships falling apart or not working, how come?
A: Many times the most poignant situations are the ones surrounding my most significant relationships in my life. I have had more than one gut wrenchingly sad experience either breaking up with someone or struggling in the relationship, and music has been my respite from that angst.

Q: Will the songs change now it's getting better? Or are the more emotional songs really your style/trademark?
A: I think emotional songs will always come from the best and most creative part of me. I’m not saying one has to dwell in that place however. The best music to me is when it is a deep and beautiful thing conveying the truth of a particular emotion or situational reality. I will keep making music that is honest, that’s my best answer.

Q: Can we expect new songs anytime soon or maybe an new album? Cause you were busy recording songs in LA right?
A: I was recording a couple new songs in LA, but they haven’t been released yet. I have been recording at home here in Canada, both for my self titiled brand, and also under a new side project! Very exciting and very different sound indeed.

Q&A JOEL GELEYNSE - PART 1

05/23/2012

Q: Do you miss Holland?
A: Yes, there are many things about Holland that I miss. #1- the incredible fans and friends I’ve made there from Volendam, Amsterdam, Den Haag, Hilversum, Ede, Apeldoorn, Zoetermeer…. The list goes on. I miss the relaxed pace of life and time to sit for coffee, the farmers markets with fresh Hyacinths blooming and the fresh catch from the Nord Zee. The whir of my bike tires on the road at night driving around peaceful and historic Dutch neighbourhoods. The doileys hanging in open living room windows that reveal cozy practical dutch living rooms. I miss performing in SDOHIJ, and feeling the rush of the deafening crowd and skating on national TV night after night.

Q: What is your best reminder of the Netherlands?
A: My best reminder is the unwavering and consistent support of my friends and fans in NL!

Q: Can we ever expect you on the ice again in Holland?
A: In the immediate future, no, but I would consider SDOHIJ again if/when SBS6 or RTL decides they should run it again! I was so successful!

Q: If you could give a award to someone who would it be and why?
A: My friend Cathy, for being my loyal sidekick who still laughs at all my very tired jokes. So it would be the award entitled “Longsuffering”.

Q: How important are fans to you?
A: Without fans and supporters, I would have no career, I would be dead in the water and I wouldn’t be able to make new music or videos or play shows. My career is sustained by the passionate fanbase, and I’m so grateful.

Q: Do you have a top 5 of presents from fans? Do they have a special place in your house?
A: Can’t answer that! Any token of support that comes from the heart and is because my music has impacted someone is just amazing enough on its own.

YES!  I keep everything in my upstairs guest room, so I can show off how amazing my supporters are.  It produces quite an eyebrow raise for most people!

Q: What is the meaning of your tattoo?
A: My tattoo is a one of a kind celtic/tribal Christian cross, and it was very meaningful for me to get in 2006, because I had a very difficult year on my very first cruise ship contract, and I wanted after that to claim some of my roots and Christianity back that I felt I had lost while at sea. I got it done in Cozumel Mexico for $200! It’s my only tattoo.

Q: When did you form your band and how did you meet your band members?
A: I formed my first band in 2002, it was a collection of people I met at college and the radio station I was working at as a DJ. Over the years almost every one of my friends has been a member in some form. Even my house-mate Anna became a back up singer, my friend Cathy learned bass guitar in the van on the way to a concert in Iowa, my cousin Beth was my back up singer at one point too- and I used to make her wear regal golden evening gowns.

The current band consists of Dave Siekanowicz (electric guitar) met him through church (The Meeting House), Oskkar Ciejek (bass guitar) met him through Dave S, David Alexander (Drums) MY COUSIN! And Taylor Evans (vocals) met him through David Alexander.

Q: Who are you biggest musical influences?
A: Hillsong, Alanis Morissette, Sigur Ros, Pilate, Coldplay, Enya, Beethoven, Hans Zimmer, Dave Matthews, Bon Iver, Matchbox Twenty, Devotchka, Jason Walker, Greg Laswell, U2, Collective Soul, Counting Crows, Lights… the list could continue forever..

Q: What are your goals for 2012?
A: Make more great music, grow lots of veggies, grow in love, and become that much cooler of a person, doing real things and living a life of integrity.
